In the Market for Wheels Empty
PostSubject: In the Market for Wheels   In the Market for Wheels I_icon_minitimeDecember 11th 2009, 4:37 pm

Ok, before you get too excited, they're for my '02 Intrepid.

I've had this slow leak in one of my tires and an even slower leak in another. No problem during the Summer because I drive it less, but I found that I don't enjoy having to fill my tires as much when it's 4 degrees out now.

So, I take it into Discount Tire in Algonquin hoping that I have leaky valves & I'm told that the air loss is due to the cheap chrome plating Chrysler put on the wheels that is corroding and flaking and causing sealing issues. I'm not totally shocked as I have seen it flaking off on the numerous occasions that I've had to replace the center caps (@ $27 a pop, I've probably paid for at least one new wheel already).

The car will never be in a show, but I like it and I try to keep it nice washing and waxing and all. So, I'm looking for a moderately-priced rim for the P225/55 R17 Yokohamas I have on it.

My preference for boring-looking cars is well documented so I'm not looking for anything flashy, but I think black rims would be kind of subdued and look decent at the same time.

I've never bought a rim that didn't already have a tire and an entire car/truck around it already. Suggestions?

You can bring the SRT to my house, I have a ladder free zone.

I think black rims would look nice on it. Check out tirerack.com's website too they have rims and you can "try them on the car."

All of their wheels are kind of "spindly" if you know what I mean. I think I'd like them a little more beefy. Kind of like cop wheels. That's a very cool feature the site has; putting them on the car.

I have to fight to get that ladder off the wall. It's not going anywhere.

How many times have you hit that back wall? You sure do get close to it! I'm surprised you don't have those hanging tennis balls. Very Happy

I have a laser system mounted on the ceiling. It beams down on my dash and lets me know how far I'm in. The most foolproof system I've found.

Eric, buy my srt rims. Powder coat them black. Tires go with the rims. 350 for powder coat, 2000 for r/tires. You still save half of what they cost new. Plus you get a set of those fabulous goody rs-a tires that we love so much. yeah baby

It might be worth looking into getting the rims refinished. Maybe that will fix the prob and be cheaper than new rims.

I have no idea what that would cost though but if your tires are good and the rims arent bent, then its worth a shot IMO.

Heck yeah Eric, get those rims rechromed. Or at least have someone wire brush the inside to get all the crap out of there. Then they won't leak.

I've got these 17" knock-off rims that I used to use on my TA in the winter time that I bought from tirerack. That was back in the mid-90's. They've got a bit of curb rash on 'em but with a little work and painted black, they might do the trick. You can have them if you want them. They're just taking up space in my garage. All you have to do is to dispose of the 12 year old Blizzaks that are on 'em now. It's unfortunate because those tires only have about 5k miles on them but they're too old to drive on safely.

I have the same problem as you, mine has the 16" chrome rims tough. But i've heard dodge , chrysler got the wrong type of rim to chrome plate. Can't remember who told me this but i'm guessing that is why they went with chrome clad rims now, because of all the complaints on their old piece of shit rims.

This is harder than I thought it would be.

I was thinking more like this except black.

If all else fails, maybe I'll take Bill up on his offer. Thanks, Bill!

Well, if you do find a nice set of rims, you could use these knock-offs for winter. The ones that Jontoad showed and the ones you picked out are both very nice. But if it were me I wouldn't run nice new rims in the winter. You've got first dibs on them if you want 'em.
