While I was at the gas station by my house a sweet silver SRT8 Charger rolls up. Guy had just bought it by the tags on it. I was going to card him and then I notice he is pumping 87 octane in to his car. Now i know gas prices are crazy right now but 93 octane at this station is 3.71 a gallon. If you can't afford the gas for the charger why buy it right now. Is that snobbish of me?

he will learn sooner or later. when it gets warm out and he gets detonation. eventually he will put a nice hole in the top of a piston.

then he can use the 5 bux per fill up he saved to spend a shit ton on fixing the car.

I just wanted to walk over and say hey you know that its not good for your car. I think he would have taken it the wrong way. Looked like he just bought the car cause it was an SRT not cause he is a MOPAR enthusiast.

maybe he didn't know he was using the wrong octane...

also, superchips has a 87 octane tune for the SRT for people who want to run lower ocane. it's obviously lower on power with that tune. i doubt he was using that though.

yes it does, because the factory tune has timing that is set up for premium. you can make a tune to run whatever you want though.

but if you use a lower octane with a tune made for higher octane the fuel ignites while the piston is on its upstroke. that is called detonation. it sounds like marbles shaking in a can. it causes high cylinder temps and it can blow headgaskets or burn up pistons.

our cars have knock sensors that detect that and cut timing. so in theory he should just feel loss of power when it pulls timing and not damage anything. but you never know.

I think it was just a sort of fad buy or status symbol buy.
